Facility Dogs Bring Comfort to Children’s Hospitals

Facility dogs are making a significant impact in children’s hospitals by providing comfort and joy to young patients. These full-time working dogs, unlike volunteer therapy dogs, can access sensitive areas and offer consistent support throughout a child’s hospital stay.

Experts note an increase in the use of facility dogs across children’s hospitals in the nation. Research supports their benefits, showing that even short interactions can enhance well-being, reduce stress and pain, and ease anxiety in medical settings. These trained dogs assist children during difficult procedures, motivate them to stay active, and bring a sense of normalcy to the hospital environment.

At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, dogs like Hadley play a vital role. They participate in physical therapy sessions, encourage interaction, and even make appearances on internal TV shows transmitting to patient rooms. Their presence is felt outside patient areas too, with images decorating hallways and mailboxes where children can send letters and drawings.

“Their impact on young patients is profound, helping them endure treatment with more resilience,” said a hospital representative.

Numerous activities involve these dogs. Five-year-old patient Calvin Owens, for instance, engages with Hadley during therapy. Meanwhile, child life assistant Schellie Scott works alongside Hadley in art projects with patients. These activities not only provide emotional support but also involve creative engagement.

Facility dogs like Grover also contribute to media projects created within the hospital, further integrating joy and comfort into the patients’ daily lives. These dogs are recognized widely within the hospital. Their images, often humorously adorned, are prominently displayed. Graduates even wear caps in celebratory images distributed throughout the facility.

Facility dogs Grover and Hadley have become cherished partners in caregiving, helping to transform the hospitalization experience into a more positive one for children facing treatments and recovery.
