Colin Gray, the father of Colt Gray, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. A Georgia judge found that he failed as a parent by ignoring warning signs before the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting.
Judge Nicholas Primm of the Barrow County Superior Court stated that Colin Gray overlooked glaring issues. Despite these signs, he allowed his son access to firearms without procuring necessary mental health assistance.
“The warning lights were flashing brighter and brighter,” Primm emphasized. “You failed as a parent.”
In March, a jury convicted Colin Gray on 27 counts, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors argued that he provided his son with an AR-15-style rifle, ignoring concerns about Colt’s mental health. Colin Gray is the first parent in the U.S. to be convicted of murder in a school shooting case.

The 2024 shooting resulted in the deaths of teachers Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Nine others were injured. Prosecutors highlighted that Colin Gray ignored his son’s mental health deterioration and continued firearm access, including the weapon used in the attack.
Colin Gray’s conviction marks a rare instance of a parent being criminally charged in connection with a child’s actions in a school shooting.
Apalachee High School is preparing to open its doors for a new school year, while the community continues processing the events of the past.
