Daily routines and school activities have become a source of comfort for students and residents who have faced immense loss. A football game might end in defeat, but the normalcy it brings is a welcome relief.
On September 10, the Shadle Park High School cheerleaders took their place on the sideline during a football game in Spokane, Washington. This occurred just weeks after fires devastated large parts of the state’s second-largest city.
Dailon Wells-Dutton, a 17-year-old student, is among those affected. After the blaze destroyed his neighborhood, he found himself waking up in a different room within an unfamiliar apartment.
His mother worked to replace some of what was lost, including philosophy books and family photos. Yet, his closet remains mostly barren, and a new teddy bear is tucked into a new bed, unlike the worn one he had cherished since he was 3 years old.
