The Incident
Mandy Fackler, identified by friends, leaves behind two children aged 12 and 9. Reports indicate that Deputy Troy Savetz of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office killed Fackler and then himself following an argument. Savetz, who was with the department’s marine unit, had a tumultuous relationship with Fackler. Their conflict escalated over a dispute about a TV, as detailed by Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
Sequence of Events
On the day of the incident, Savetz awaited Fackler’s return from the beach with her children. Angered over a TV, he confronted Fackler with a gun. After Fackler attempted to call for help, Savetz took her phone, forcing her to instruct her children to go inside. The children complied, calling 911 to provide dispatchers with critical details that helped identify Savetz.
Authorities found Fackler’s phone at the scene and launched an immediate search. Approximately 90 minutes later, they discovered the vehicle in Spring Hill, finding both Savetz and Fackler inside, dead.
Impact on Children
The children, unharmed, are now with their biological father. Sheriff Chris Nocco commended them for their courage during the ordeal, emphasizing how critical their actions were in the response process.
“We know that your mother said to go inside to save your lives and to call 911. You did exactly what your mom asked you to do,” Nocco stated, commending the children’s calmness and bravery.
Savetz’s Career
Before this incident, Savetz was recognized for his commendable service. In 2014, he received an award for saving a man’s life, leading to recognition by the Tampa Bay Rays as “Our Everyday MVP.” He also became an ambassador for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Tampa Bay, after adopting a pot-bellied pig.
However, following the murder-suicide, Sheriff Gualtieri stressed that Savetz’s actions stripped him of his identity as a law enforcement officer, labeling him a criminal.
