Student Arrested Over Homemade Weapons and Robbery Plot
A 14-year-old middle school student in Florida was arrested and charged as an adult for allegedly creating homemade firearms and planning a robbery, according to authorities. Julian Davis, a student from Switzerland Point Middle School, was taken into custody following a tip-off regarding his activities.
Investigation and Arrest Details
The investigation commenced on April 27 when St. Johns County sheriff’s deputies received information about Davis and his 13-year-old friend. The boys were reportedly communicating on Telegram about conducting a robbery using firearms. The messages allegedly discussed building a shotgun and a musket and acquiring zip ties.
Sheriff Robert Hardwick and federal investigators addressed the case in a recent press conference, highlighting the seriousness of Davis’s actions. They believe charging him helped prevent a potential tragedy at the school and in the community.
Discovery of Weapons and Associated Items
Davis was apprehended on April 30 and faces multiple charges related to firearms and explosives. His 13-year-old accomplice was charged with conspiracy to commit a robbery but was not charged as an adult. Authorities conducted several searches of Davis’ home, uncovering homemade firearms, ammunition, potential explosive components, and improvised handcuffs.
Additionally, notes describing weapon construction and drawings resembling Molotov cocktails were found. A tactical vest with white supremacy symbols and a manifesto by Brenton Tarrant, a mass shooter, were also discovered.
Further Findings and Concerns
Other concerning items included a U.S. Army improvised munitions handbook and “The Anarchist Cookbook,” which contains instructions on making explosives, weapons, and drugs. Authorities suggest Davis’ plan may have involved more than just the intended robbery of a person referred to as “CJ,” whose identity remains unknown.
Sheriff Hardwick noted that Davis was fixated on mass shootings and spent significant time researching them, attempting to emulate such acts.
Legal Proceedings and Consequences
Total bail for Davis was set at $240,000. He pleaded not guilty and faces further arraignment after additional charges were filed. His companion spent 21 days in juvenile detention before release.
Neither student will return to Switzerland Point Middle School. Officials emphasized there was no direct threat to the school, thanks to a tip-off via FortifyFL, a tool developed post-Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting to identify suspicious student behavior.
