Former ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Cecilia Vega has spoken out about her departure from CBS News. She shared her experiences at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference & Expo in New Orleans. Vega accused her previous employers of interfering with the show’s reporting.
Vega was dismissed by the network in May. Despite initial hesitation, she addressed her experience. She remarked that losing her job was significant and urged taking action even when it’s frightening.
Vega alleged that while reporting on anti-ICE unrest in Minnesota, there was pressure to include footage of agitators attacking supposed ICE agents. She found no credible examples to support such claims. She also stated her team was asked to use comments from Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey about police confronting ICE agents, which she labeled as misinformation.
During a press conference on January 14, Mayor Frey mentioned public calls for police to oppose ICE agents, which he dismissed as problematic. CBS News has seen changes under new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, appointed by Paramount CEO David Ellison.
Vega claimed her report on President Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran was also subjected to editorial influence. She was instructed to introduce it with a statement suggesting Iran was outmatched by the U.S. and Israel, which she felt was biased.
In response to whether these influences affected her work, Vega stated these elements did not appear in her pieces. Although she didn’t name Weiss directly, Vega mentioned the new CBS administration directed certain instructions. She noted she never had a personal discussion with Weiss before her termination.
CBS News responded to Vega’s claims by asserting respect for her contributions but dismissed her statements as not reflecting reality. Weiss had commented that editorial decisions are part of her role as editor-in-chief.
Vega’s departure was part of broader changes at ’60 Minutes’, including the exit of other staffers like correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and executive producer Tanya Simon. Scott Pelley, another correspondent, was also removed following a tense discussion with new executive producer Nick Bilton.
