Hundreds of former journalists and eight press freedom organizations are urging the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to confront media attacks by the Trump administration during the upcoming dinner. This dinner was originally scheduled for April but was cut short due to a gunman’s attack. It will now be held Friday at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington, with tightened security measures.
The appeal builds on a letter circulated before the initial dinner, emphasizing heightened attacks on journalists and press freedom. Organized by former ABC News correspondent Lisa Stark and producer Ian Cameron, the letter highlights Justice Department subpoenas of New York Times journalists over security issues related to President Trump’s Air Force One jet, gifted by Qatar. The subpoenas included phone records of reporters’ relatives.
The letter demands the WHCA to firmly stand for press freedom, defend journalists publicly against President Trump’s criticisms, and oppose efforts to undermine the First Amendment. WHCA president Weijia Jiang previously stated that the dinner’s goal is to honor journalists and the First Amendment, which the signatories argue is contradicted by the president’s repeated attacks.
Signatories include groups like the Society of Professional Journalists and the Committee to Protect Journalists, plus around 520 individuals, mostly retired journalists. Many signed the prior April letter.
President Trump expressed intent to attend the rescheduled dinner, viewing it as a symbol of resilience against threats to daily life. He remains undecided on delivering his planned speech, expected to criticize the press, but noted the dinner as a “HOT” ticket in his social media post.
