A former Thai lawmaker has allegedly confessed to attacking a local official near Bangkok. The revelation came during a phone call with a media commentator shortly before his detention. Chalong Reawraeng, who served in Thailand’s House of Representatives, is accused of shooting ex-police officer Thongchai Yenprasert. The attack occurred in Nonthaburi province, just outside the capital, on Monday. Yenprasert’s driver was also harmed in the incident. Provincial police chief Major General Dejrapee Kongdee confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
This incident follows a tragic event in the same province days earlier, where a teenager shot his grandparents and opened fire at a school. The attack resulted in nine deaths, including the suspect, sparking new discussions on gun control in Thailand.
According to reports from local media and the BBC, journalist and presenter Anchalee Paireerak received a call during a livestream on YouTube. She appeared shocked, suggesting someone had been shot in the head. “You need to wait there for the cops,” Paireerak instructed the caller, urging them not to leave.
Footage reportedly captures the alleged incident outside a government building in Nonthaburi. However, Newsweek has not independently verified these claims.
