Giannis Antetokounmpo signed with the Miami Heat this offseason through a major trade, bringing along his Milwaukee Bucks teammate, Bobby Portis, to Miami. The Milwaukee Bucks received Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in the year’s draft, and several future first- and second-round picks as part of the exchange. The Heat introduced Antetokounmpo and Portis in a press conference last week. Antetokounmpo also participated in his first workout at the team’s practice facility.
In a behind-the-scenes video by the Heat, Antetokounmpo expressed his feelings about training in Miami. “I don’t care how it works, what happens. I’m happy that I’m having this feeling. Like, even today, working out with you guys. I try to figure you guys out. I haven’t had that in a long time—for 13 years. Like, I knew who I was working with. I knew everybody,” he said, highlighting his need for the challenge and pressure of a new environment.
A long-standing issue existed between the Bucks and their two-time MVP, stemming from Antetokounmpo’s belief that they were no longer champions. Frustration grew when the team didn’t clear him to play, despite his claims of being fit.
Trade speculation surrounded Antetokounmpo for months. Reports indicated a possible trade before the February deadline, which ultimately didn’t happen as Milwaukee decided to retain him despite the team’s struggles.
The trade with Miami involved significant components and seems to have made Antetokounmpo content with his new team. Miami previously participated in the Play-In Tournament but missed a key win due to Bam Adebayo’s injury against the Hornets. Now, Antetokounmpo partners with Adebayo, forming a powerful frontcourt capable of delivering strong performances.
Adebayo marked history with a remarkable 83-point game last season, joining basketball legends like Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant. Antetokounmpo also achieved a career-high of 64 points against the Indiana Pacers in 2023. With coach Erik Spoelstra leading the Heat, Antetokounmpo might surpass his previous records. Early signs show his enthusiasm to excel with his new team in an improved environment.
