Campaign Kickoff and Focus on Trump
Gov. JB Pritzker initiated a statewide campaign bus tour, targeting Republican President Donald Trump in his remarks. As he embarks on a bid for a third term, Pritzker highlighted Trump’s influence on Illinois’ struggles during his tenure. Less emphasis was placed on his GOP opponent, Darren Bailey.
At a rally outside the Adler Planetarium, Pritzker stressed that the election is crucial for working people, affordability, and protection from Trump’s impact. Christian Mitchell, his running mate, joined him in the campaign launch.
Trump’s Influence in Illinois
Pritzker has consistently criticized Trump, especially with the election day approaching. He linked Trump’s policies with negative impacts on Illinois, urging voters to view the gubernatorial race as significant as the presidential one.
Despite Bailey’s strong past support for Trump, reflected in Trump’s endorsement during the 2022 gubernatorial campaign, Pritzker uses this association to his advantage. Trump has generally fared poorly in Illinois, losing by significant margins in past presidential elections.
Economic Challenges and Criticisms
Pritzker pointed to challenges posed by the Trump administration in balancing state budgets and providing essential support services like healthcare and food assistance. He criticized Bailey indirectly when discussing the economic effects of Trump’s policies on Illinois.
Bailey and his running mate, Aaron Del Mar, countered this message by critiquing Pritzker’s handling of state economic issues, especially focusing on job losses such as those at Tyson Foods.
Pritzker’s Policies and Campaign Support
In response to layoffs at Tyson, Pritzker described the situation as serious while noting a willingness from the company to sell the facility. He again connected the issues to national policy trends, including beef price rises and other facility closures.
Despite this, Pritzker redirected discussion back to Trump’s influence and raised concerns about Bailey’s views, referencing educational content at Bailey’s Full Armor Christian Academy. The academy’s curriculum, promoting debunked scientific ideas, has drawn criticism.
Union Support and Legislation
After beginning the tour, Pritzker rallied with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 14 members. This occurred the same day he received support from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, representing numerous construction workers.
At the rally, Mitchell emphasized the importance of union support and warned against Bailey’s potential threat to workers. Drawing comparisons to anti-union policies under former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, Pritzker’s campaign focused on combating perceived threats from Trump’s legacy.
Latter in the day, Pritzker enacted laws establishing regulations for high-speed e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric unicycles, effective next year, and announced a recent credit upgrade for the state.
