As of Tuesday’s WNBA games, the Indiana Fever were leading the Eastern Conference with a record of 20-12. The team was excelling in scoring with standout players Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark at the forefront. Although on the surface, things seemed promising for coach Stephanie White and her team with the playoffs approaching, a different reality unfolded during a home game against the New York Liberty.
Coach Stephanie White experienced the displeasure of some fans as boos rang out during pregame introductions. This happened in spite of the Fever’s impressive 106-92 victory over the Liberty. White’s player, Caitlin Clark, addressed this issue at a postgame press conference, expressing her discontent.
“I hated that our fans booed her before the game,” Clark stated. “We’re going to ride for her, and we’re always going to have her back.”
The boos came on the heels of White’s impassioned defense of Sophie Cunningham, who was fouled in a game against the Chicago Sky. White didn’t initially see the replay of the hard foul resulting in Cunningham’s bloody mouth and the subsequent ejection of DiJonai Carrington, who committed the foul. However, White acknowledged its severity upon review, calling it egregious.
White was clear in her postgame remarks about not tolerating narratives that sought to create division within the league. She reaffirmed her support for her players despite online criticism:
“The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness won’t win,” White said. “We are united.”
White ended the conference by stating, “Love will win, grace will win, and kindness will win,” before declaring critics could “go to hell.”
Despite not seeing the foul replay during the August 8 game against the Sky, White defended Carrington as not having intended to harm Cunningham. White interpreted the sequence as part of the competitive nature of the sport.
“Yeah, it was a hard foul. I don’t think DiJonai intended to hit her neck,” White explained. “But it did happen, and I thought it was the right call.”
This sequence of events, within a brief 72-hour window, painted a complex picture of White’s stance. It contributed to the mixed feelings among Fever fans and points towards an underlying frustration with how White handled the situation involving Cunningham. Such tensions present a unique challenge for White, balancing team success with maintaining player and fan support.
