Indiana, the defending champion, overcame a strong challenge from Northwestern, securing a narrow 29-23 victory in the 2026 Big Ten opener on Friday night. The Hoosiers, favored to win by three touchdowns, faced unexpected difficulties, and for much of the first quarter, they led by a rare score of 2-0.
Indiana’s Unusual Lead
Indiana took an early lead with a rather uncommon 2-0 score, reminiscent of old-school football. Despite extensive struggles throughout the night, the Hoosiers held leads of 2-0, 5-0, 12-0, and 12-7 before Northwestern tightened the score to 22-20 midway through the final quarter. Indiana ultimately emerged victorious, although their performance was less than stellar.
“We got Pearl Harbored the first two offensive plays,” remarked hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti regarding the team’s challenging start, with consecutive false starts followed by a turnover at the goal line.
Cignetti’s colorful commentary and leadership have drawn attention ever since he took over Indiana and led them to a national title. He entered Indiana with confidence, famously instructing reporters to “Google me.”
Cignetti’s Impact on Indiana Football
Cignetti, along with other prominent coaches, has been a significant presence in college football. Under his leadership, Indiana has transformed into a recognized football school, though their schedule presents challenges with upcoming games against Michigan and Ohio State in October.
Cignetti’s candid remarks and Indiana’s performance continue to be topics of interest, and the Hoosiers now prepare for more rigorous matches this season.
