Investigation Continues After Business Jet Crash on Texas Highway

Investigators are examining the wreckage of a business jet that crashed on a Texas highway, resulting in the death of one person on board. The pilots had reported mechanical problems and requested an emergency landing prior to the crash. Bystanders quickly attempted to assist police in rescuing passengers and crew from the fiery aircraft.

Video evidence shows individuals trying to break the cockpit glass with a sledgehammer while others used improvised tools to open the aircraft door. A firefighter entered the smoke-filled jet to rescue a person still inside. Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño remarked on the fortunate avoidance of a mass casualty event.

A tragedy that could have been much worse was avoided, said Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation. Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez Jr. stated that investigators are reconstructing the accident at the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed at the request of the family. The aircraft carried two pilots and three teenagers. The Cessna Citation Latitude, operated by NetJets, departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, destined for Austin, Texas.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on Loop 20 highway, soon after the pilots reported low fuel and mechanical issues. Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez noted a loss of communication with the control tower at a critical moment.

Video shared on social media documents the aircraft’s rapid descent down the highway and its collision with a light post. The jet then collided with a car, injuring a motorist, who was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Zayra Garza, a witness, described the scene as resembling a movie. She recorded the event while others, including her husband, attempted to assist. Garza saw teenagers and a pilot emerge from the plane before a firefighter intervened to save an unconscious person.

The intense smoke required police officers helping at the scene to retreat, with five officers treated for smoke inhalation. Concerns about a potential explosion loomed as smoke continued to billow from the aircraft.

This crash marked the third significant aviation incident in recent days, following a B-52 crash in California and a plane crash in Missouri that involved multiple fatalities.
