Ceremonies are underway in five cities across Iran and Iraq to honor the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Iranian state media reports millions have gathered to pay their respects following his death in late February. These gatherings serve as a demonstration of both grief and the strength of the Islamic Republic.
In Tehran, journalists captured images of the mourning crowds. Officials reduced the planned procession route due to the overwhelming number of participants, opting for a shorter journey from the center of a road to Azadi Square.
On Tuesday, memorials were held in Qom, known for its significance in Shiite Muslim scholarship. The funeral program will conclude in Mashhad on Thursday. The ayatollah is set to be buried at the Imam Reza shrine, regarded by some Shiites as a spiritual successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
The chosen locations for these ceremonies signify the leader’s influential position and his respected clerical standing.
