An accusation of rape against Graham Platner, a Senate candidate in Maine, has created significant tension within the Democratic Party. Progressives and moderates are preparing for an upcoming decision on selecting a Senate nominee to replace him. There is also discussion about Platner’s influence on the process.
On Tuesday, Democratic allies of Platner urged him to end his Senate campaign following the allegation. The party’s concern is that the Senate seat, crucial for gaining control of the chamber, might be lost. Platner had previously faced scrutiny due to a tattoo with Nazi symbolism, controversial Reddit posts, and his relationships with women. However, the recent accusation led to key figures, including the Maine Democratic Party leaders and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, to withdraw their support.
Platner has been asked to step down before the July 13 deadline to allow for a new Democratic candidate to oppose Senator Susan Collins, a prominent Republican in Maine. A major super PAC supporting Democratic Senate efforts has decided to reallocate $24 million in advertising funds to other states if Platner remains in the race.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who was an early supporter of Platner, added his voice to those advising Platner to withdraw. In a statement, Sanders said that given the severity of the allegations, Platner should step aside.
During a private call on Monday evening with his campaign staff, Platner hinted at having some leverage in influencing the choice of his replacement, despite not explicitly stating plans to withdraw. Sources familiar with the discussion revealed that he suggested a decision might follow shortly.
