Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will not play against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday. He has a superficial blood clot in his calf, which he has been treating for almost a week. The Eagles made this announcement on Thursday, detailing Hurts’ medical status and his game’s absence.
On October 8th, a Thursday, Hurts sought treatment for his calf after practice. He informed the medical team that he was injured during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment since the game, despite full practices on Wednesday and Thursday. He continued treatments on Friday, practiced fully, and was added to the practice report.

Concerned for his health, the Eagles conducted an ultrasound on Saturday after the team’s London flight and walkthrough. The ultrasound detected a superficial blood clot. Medical evaluations in London affirmed its safety, advising continued activity and recommending a new ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and upon his return to Philadelphia.
After playing in Sunday’s game without restrictions, Hurts received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced fully on Wednesday. Consultations with the league office continued throughout this period. Another ultrasound on Wednesday night indicated movement in the clot, leading to Hurts being ruled out for the Panthers game. The team’s priority is his health and safety.
Blood clots pose risks by potentially blocking blood flow, leading to serious conditions such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. These can also result in tissue damage or become fatal without timely intervention. The Eagles informed the league about Hurts’ condition, highlighting the situation’s seriousness.

While Hurts’ status for Week 6 is confirmed, his availability for future games remains uncertain. The Eagles schedule includes games against division rivals like the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants following the Panthers game. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee, a third-year player, is set to start in Hurts’ place. McKee has previous experience with two career starts, resulting in one win and one loss for the team.
