Jennifer Garner once faced significant financial anxieties following her divorce from Ben Affleck. In a conversation on the “Aspire with Emma Grede” podcast, Garner, who has three children with Affleck, shared her past concerns about financially providing for herself and her family after their separation. She described a critical moment of realization about her career trajectory.
“I panicked when I was first out of my marriage and realized I had taken such a step back in my work,” Garner explained. She highlighted the uncertainty in her profession, noting, “This isn’t a career that’s like, ‘Hey, you’re 60, you’re 55, you’re 43, come on, let’s pay you more than you’ve ever made.'” Facing the challenge of being the primary caregiver for her children, she pondered, “Wait a minute, I have to take care of myself, I have to take care of these kids. So what is it going to be?”
Garner emphasized a period in her life when long movie shoots were no longer feasible. “I can’t leave these kids for six months at a time,” she stated. Although she enjoyed traveling for work, the nature of her career had to adjust to her parenting responsibilities.
Garner and Affleck initially met while filming “Pearl Harbor” in 2001, but their romantic relationship began in 2004 during the filming of “Daredevil.” Married in 2005, they separated in 2015. Garner expressed gratitude for having a balance between her career and motherhood, stating, “I was able to luxuriate in working some and being a mom a lot of time.”
In 2017, Garner co-founded the organic children’s food company, Once Upon A Farm. This step marked a critical transition in her career post-divorce. Garner also spoke about how her family’s public struggles impacted her professional life. She noted a period of reduced work during the family upheaval.
Garner reflected on the notion of “imperfection” in balancing work and family life. She advised that parents should be “radically kind” to themselves amid challenges, acknowledging that “there’s no such thing as balance.” Garner emphasized the importance of parents feeling secure for their children amid life’s big moments.
Discussing her experience raising children in a divorced household, Garner explained, “When your kids grow up in two separate households, I become mom and dad, and he becomes dad and mom.” She highlighted the genuine adjustments required when parenting across different homes and the resulting impacts.
