The Justice Department has indicted 12 individuals for their involvement in a complex drone smuggling scheme. This operation introduced dangerous contraband into federal prisons in several states. The drones were used for 38 deliveries, bringing drugs, cellphones, and weapons into 10 different facilities.
Former federal prosecutor Jim Trusty highlighted the difficulties involved in stopping drones used for smuggling. An instance of this issue was seen in Virginia, where prison officials seized a package with an estimated prison value of $324,000. This package was intercepted following an attempted drone delivery at Sussex I State Prison.
The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) reported that corrections staff found the package at around 1:30 a.m. on a Monday. Inside, authorities discovered a one-pound bag of suspected methamphetamine, 17 cellphones with chargers, and 20 sheets of paper soaked in an unidentified liquid. Additional seized items included hex wrenches, USB Wi-Fi adapters, SIM cards, disposable lighters, cigarettes, loose-leaf tobacco, cigars, tattoo ink, perfume, and glue.
Joseph Walters, VADOC Director, emphasized the advanced tactics employed by individuals attempting to smuggle goods into prisons. “This investigation serves as an important reminder,” Walters stated. “Our staff at Sussex I State Prison demonstrated commendable vigilance and dedication to maintaining safety and security.”
The situation is still under investigation by VADOC’s Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES). Authorities encourage anyone with information regarding smuggling tactics into VADOC facilities to contact OLES at 540-830-9280.
