State Representative Justin Pearson has secured his win in the Democratic primary held in Tennessee’s new 9th Congressional District. As a key member of the ‘Tennessee Three,’ Pearson overcame several contenders, including State Senator London Lamar and community activist Marion LaTroy Alexandria-Williams. His strong financial backing, largely outmatching his opponents, has set a firm foundation for his upcoming face-off against the Republican nominee in November.
Pearson’s campaign gained momentum with support from influential Democrats in the progressive faction known as ‘the Squad.’ Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Summer Lee endorsed Pearson. The group even joined him in a rally in Memphis, highlighting his influence and appeal within the progressive community.
Recognized for his dynamic and preaching-style addresses, Pearson has garnered endorsements from national left-wing organizations such as Justice Democrats and MoveOn. He gained national attention in 2023, following his participation in a gun-control protest on the Tennessee state House floor after the tragic Covenant School shooting. This activism led to his expulsion alongside State Rep. Justin Jones. Both members were later reinstated, while a third colleague, Gloria Johnson, narrowly avoided expulsion.
This primary victory comes in the wake of Tennessee’s redistricting that split Memphis among Republican-favored districts. Consequently, Democratic Representative Steve Cohen announced his retirement as Memphis lost its secure congressional seat. Under the previous map, the Memphis-centered 9th District was a Democratic stronghold, a stark contrast in an otherwise Republican-dominated state. Cohen, who stood alone in the Democrat representation from Tennessee, now leaves a challenging landscape for Democrats, given the newly drawn districts that predominantly benefit Republicans.
