Kamala Harris’s Potential 2028 Presidential Bid Focuses on Progressive Outreach

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is signaling the possibility of a 2028 presidential campaign by reaching out to progressive groups. Her efforts include connecting with pro-Palestinian organizations and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. These moves are seen as an attempt to address internal party divisions.

Harris has recently embraced several progressive policy proposals that she did not campaign on during her 2024 presidential run. Speaking at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, Harris supported expanding the Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College. She stated, “We must allow for a real conversation about revisiting certain things. We need to revisit the Electoral College.”

In the 2024 election, Harris lost both the Electoral College and popular vote to President Donald Trump. She has now expressed interest in expanding the Supreme Court, suggesting an increase to 13 justices to match the number of district courts.

Along with changes to the Supreme Court, Harris has shown support for considering statehood for Puerto Rico, in addition to her existing support for Washington, D.C. statehood. Despite these new policy positions, Harris maintains that she has not yet decided on a 2028 presidential run.

“I have not made a decision,” Harris informed her audience, emphasizing her current focus on the midterm elections. Democratic strategists have suggested that Harris is a leading contender for the 2028 presidential nomination.

At the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention in April, Harris hinted she might consider running for president again when asked by Rev. Al Sharpton. “I might. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted,” she commented.

Her outreach to progressive Democrats has included discussions with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a private meeting with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a Black women’s empowerment summit in Chicago. These efforts highlight Harris’s engagement with influential figures in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing as she mulls a potential 2028 campaign.
