Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell showcased her scoring prowess on Tuesday night, securing a victory over the Toronto Tempo with a 101-95 win. Mitchell delivered an impressive 16 points in the first quarter alone and concluded the game with 29 points. This victory marked the fifth consecutive win for the Fever.
Caitlin Clark contributed significantly to Indiana’s triumph, adding 24 points. Even with Mitchell resting during the fourth quarter, Indiana maintained its winning momentum. Their performance has placed Clark and Mitchell in the WNBA record books. The pair has now scored at least 20 points each in the same game 16 times this season, breaking the previous record of 15 set by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter from the Phoenix Mercury in 2008.
The Fever’s relentless performance continued as Aliyah Boston scored 16 points and Sophie Cunningham successfully made all three of her three-point attempts, finishing with 13 points. Indiana showed dominance throughout, never falling behind in the game.
Mitchell’s stellar night matched WNBA star A’ja Wilson’s record. Her streak of 20 consecutive games with at least 20 points equals Wilson’s achievement. However, after scoring eight points rapidly in the third quarter, Mitchell left for the locker room due to overheating, as confirmed by head coach Stephanie White.
Despite a late surge from Toronto’s Marina Mabrey, who brought the score to 97-93 with back-to-back three-pointers, the Tempo couldn’t close the gap. This loss extended Toronto’s unfortunate losing streak to 11 games.
The game had another notable moment when fans at Scotiabank Arena responded to Sophie Cunningham’s entrance with mixed reactions. This comes after Cunningham expressed her opposition to transgender girls and women in girls’ and women’s sports, as detailed in a recent ESPN profile. The audience reacted with cheers and boos, especially when a banner supporting transgender rights was displayed.
Next, the Indiana Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Toronto Tempo will confront the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
