Two off-seasons ago, All-Star guard Kelsey Plum sought a new opportunity, requesting a trade from the Las Vegas Aces. Plum had achieved significant success with the Aces, winning two WNBA titles. Her journey led her to the Los Angeles Sparks in January 2025.
Reflecting on her move, Plum shared with Sue Bird last summer, “I just remember thinking in that offseason, ‘If you really are about it, and you really believe that you are as good as you think you are, and you really think you can impact winning at the highest level, there’s only one way to find out.’”
Despite Plum’s efforts to steer the Sparks back to playoff glory, with their last appearance in 2020, challenges remain. Questionable personnel decisions have impacted the team’s performance. As a result, Plum’s time with the Sparks might be nearing an end.
Plum joined the Sparks on a one-year contract worth $999,999. Reports from league sources, speaking anonymously, suggest that the 31-year-old guard does not plan to extend her stay. Both Plum and her agent, Zack Miller of WME Basketball, have opted not to comment on her future plans.
The WNBA trade deadline looms on August 2, with Annie Costabile of The Athletic naming Plum as a prominent trade prospect. However, the Sparks have yet to initiate substantial trade discussions regarding Plum’s status.
At the start of the season, Plum led the league as a top scorer and offensive powerhouse. Unfortunately, injuries have restricted her participation to merely 12 games. She sprained her ankle in May, causing her to miss a week, and another leg injury has kept her out since June 24.
Historically, Plum has not been plagued by injuries, indicating that if a trade does not materialize, she still possesses a strong market presence for next season’s free agency.
