Without prior notice to the team’s front office, manager, or fellow players, Marte’s absence took everyone by surprise. Arizona placed him on the restricted list just 20 minutes before the game started at Fenway Park. Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo admitted that communication from Marte regarding his absence was minimal.
The situation grew more complicated as uncertainties rose about Marte’s whereabouts in Boston, with some speculation on whether he had returned to Phoenix. His agent later issued a statement revealing that Marte is addressing a personal matter and has a knee injury requiring an MRI. The statement also conveyed Marte’s appreciation for the support from fans and the team and expressed optimism about his recovery.
Team confusion about Marte’s absence continued as CEO Derrick Hall described the event as a “mystery.” Hall noted that more details from Marte are necessary, along with an apology to the team to resolve the situation.
Hall also mentioned seeing Marte at the team hotel, appearing fine before failing to show up at the stadium. Executives emphasized the importance of players attending the ballpark unless prearranged to do otherwise. They urged for immediate information regarding Marte’s condition and reasons for non-attendance, hinting at disappointment but willingness to move forward if provided adequate explanations.
Not showing up without an explanation is unusual for any player, but particularly unexpected for someone like Marte, a star player making $20 million annually. Although possible personal concerns or his knee injury might justify the absence, the lack of communication is difficult to overlook, especially amidst the team’s pursuit of a playoff position.
