At 56, Taylor Sheridan nearly retired before deciding to invest in a second Texas ranch. On the “Rodeo Time” podcast, the accomplished writer and director shared that acquiring the Four Sixes Ranch for $330 million shifted his retirement plans, leading him to secure an exclusivity agreement with Paramount.
“I was preparing to retire,” Sheridan said. “I had plans after ‘Yellowstone’ to relax. I’d purchased a ranch in Weatherford with cash, owing nothing. My vision was to enjoy horse shows and manage a small herd.” Buying the ranch changed these plans. He knew he wouldn’t be quitting the industry soon by making the purchase.
Before buying the ranch, Sheridan ensured the general manager would stay for daily operations and that his son was prepared to run it in the future. The legendary Four Sixes Ranch served as a setting for several “Yellowstone” episodes.
Sheridan first encountered the ranch’s then-owner, Anne Marion, while arranging filming there. After Marion passed away, Sheridan learned that Marion didn’t leave the ranch to her daughter and it was to be sold. She wanted someone to uphold her vision, which led them to Sheridan.
When faced with the $330 million price, Sheridan humorously recalled telling the sellers, “I’m about 300 million short.” To finance the purchase, Sheridan signed a deal with Paramount. “Paramount wanted an exclusive deal as they feared I might leave,” he mentioned. “After what happened, I agreed to the deal, and they asked if I had a number in mind. I confirmed I did.” The ranch was purchased with a group of investors, closing the deal on January 21, 2022.
Following the agreement, Sheridan launched several series, including “Mayor of Kingstown,” “1883,” “1923,” “Lioness,” “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” and “The Madison.” Michael Kelly, an actor in “Lioness,” lauded Sheridan’s work, telling ScreenRant, “I’ve told Taylor, ‘Anything you want me to do, I’ll do. He is a unique talent,'” praising his storytelling skills and intelligence.
