Waukegan senior Kevion Moton’s dedication on the field is shaping a brighter season for the Bulldogs. Despite their winless 2025 season, Moton remains a crucial two-way player, inspiring positive change through action.
“I am not a big talker, but I want my actions to show others how to do things correctly,” Moton explained. He believes his offseason work has influenced his teammates, contributing to increased readiness and participation.
This year, the team numbers over 40 players, as noted by Darrell Thomas, Waukegan’s first-year coach. Moton hopes this improvement will translate into success for the Bulldogs. Recently, they faced a 41-12 defeat at Niles North but are gearing up for their first home game against North Chicago on Friday.
Moton is optimistic about the season. “This year we’ve come together more as a team, and a lot of people have stepped up in coming to practice,” he said, affirming confidence in their backups’ growing capabilities.
The Bulldogs aim to surpass their historical record of winning no more than one game per season since 2016. “I would really want two or three wins and at least compete with teams,” Moton stated. He desires respect on the field, envisioning challenging practice sessions for opposing teams.
In the season opener, Moton performed impressively with three tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. His physical presence, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 230 pounds, contributed significantly to the Bulldogs achieving 213 yards rushing.
Coach Thomas commended Moton’s consistent impact over his four-year tenure, mentioning that Moton’s offseason dedication included extensive weight-room sessions and role diversification to maximize impact.
Moton has transitioned from linebacker to defensive end, a move that suits his style. “At end, there’s more action there,” he said, emphasizing his preference for direct confrontation at the defensive edge.
His offseason training focused on speed and endurance enhancement. Moton attended a speed training class led by Zion-Benton track coach Darnell Rios in addition to personal hill runs and neighborhood circuits, noting increased elusiveness and agility during gameplay.
His self-improvement drives team enthusiasm as well. “You can see him always trying to motivate others to get to practice,” said senior middle linebacker Jeremiah Hood, highlighting Moton’s role in enhancing team dynamics.
Moton’s passion for football is evident through his connection to the sport and team camaraderie. “Being out there with the people I’ve grown up playing with, hearing the crowd, it’s a great feeling,” Moton reflected.
