In a recent clarification, Buckingham Palace stated that King Charles III will not personally receive a petition from the Jamaican government concerning reparations for slavery. Initial reports had implied that the king would engage directly with the petition, but this has now been corrected.
A Jamaican delegation is scheduled to meet with British officials on Monday. Their aim is to have the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council review their request for reparations. While earlier headlines suggested the petition would be handed to the king, a palace spokesperson clarified this was incorrect.
The spokesperson explained, “We understand the Jamaican government is seeking a petition to be heard before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. The process involves lodging it with the Judicial Committee for consideration under section four of the 1833 Act.” Furthermore, Jamaican representatives will engage in bilateral discussions with the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
The spokesperson added, “His Majesty has repeatedly expressed his commitment to fostering better understanding of slavery and exploring ways to address historical injustices for the benefit of today’s communities.” This follows a speech King Charles III delivered to Commonwealth leaders where he acknowledged the ongoing impact of painful historical aspects and emphasized the importance of learning from past lessons.
