The New York Knicks achieved a remarkable feat by outscoring the San Antonio Spurs by 28 points following the Wu-Tang Clan’s halftime show. This led to the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. During the intense game at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks overcame a 29-point deficit, causing excitement among the fans.
Initially, the Spurs dominated the game with strong momentum, and the Knicks struggled to find solutions. San Antonio Spurs forward, Victor Wembanyama, admitted, “We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.” Wembanyama faced a hostile New York crowd, receiving boos and jeers throughout the night. A reversed call on a defensive foul against him only fueled the crowd’s reactions.
Despite these challenges, Wembanyama appeared unfazed after a flagrant foul by Mitchell Robinson. Cameras caught him saying, “I’m in your head!” This indicated his confidence even as the game shifted. The Spurs managed only 30 points in the latter half and turned the ball over nine times. A 20-point lead in the fourth quarter quickly evaporated.
OG Anunoby played a crucial role, scoring the decisive basket in the closing moments. After the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson expressed his disappointment, “To put as much good work into that first half as we did and get the lead that we had and not finish the job, it’s disappointing.” He noted the team’s loss of aggressiveness and conviction, which allowed the Knicks to capitalize.
Wembanyama summed up the experience, saying, “It was painful… It feels like we worked too hard and gave up our leads.” With the Knicks now leading the series, the Spurs face a daunting task of winning three games in a row to prevent the Knicks from claiming their first NBA title since 1973.
Wembanyama added, “It’s going to go one of two ways: a bad one and a good one. The bad one will be giving up. The good one will be getting stronger through this.” He stressed the team’s need to remain united and overcome this setback.
The New York Knicks celebrated their stunning 107-106 victory, marking a pivotal moment in the series. The outcome of the next games will determine the Spurs’ resilience and the Knicks’ path to potential championship victory.
