Holes were drilled near the roots of tall pines, and a toxic chemical was poured into them, causing the death of at least 10 trees. Some were over 100 years old. According to Washoe County officials, this isn’t the first occurrence; similar incidents have happened at least three times since 2022. The responsible party has not been identified.
Lt. Chad McKinnon from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office suggests this act was likely done to enhance property value. He speculates that the perpetrator might want to improve the lake view to increase the house’s sales price.

In Maine, a similar situation occurred. Amelia and Arthur Bond III, notable figures from St. Louis, were implicated in the poisoning of neighbors’ trees. The trees obstructed the view from their $3-million summer home. They used a powerful herbicide to kill the trees and then offered to pay for their removal. Suspicious, the neighbor tested the soil, uncovering the poisoning.
The Bonds faced significant financial penalties, totaling over $1.7 million in settlements and environmental fines. Critics believe the Bonds should face criminal charges since they ultimately achieved what they intended: removal of the trees.
Efforts to Find the Perpetrator
The Lake Tahoe community is taking measures to identify the poisoner. Authorities are reviewing recent tree removal permit applications for potential leads. Residents are calling for increased surveillance and security efforts, such as installing cameras and patrols. Local activists and online investigators are examining properties that could benefit from the tree poisonings.
