Andrean’s freshman outside hitter, Aleece Ehler, had a memorable first season. Coach Grant Bell described it as a ‘trial by fire’ where she quickly learned the ropes. Ehler’s stats were impressive: 298 digs, 196 kills, and 57 aces. Her efforts earned her All-Northwest Crossroads Conference and all-district recognition.
This year presents a new challenge with four key players having graduated, leaving the team without any seniors. Ehler is expected to step up and lead. Bell wants her to build more confidence and become more vocal. Ehler sets high standards for herself but prioritizes enjoying the game. She believes in maintaining a positive mindset, working hard, playing hard, and keeping her spirits high, even encouraging her teammates.
Ehler’s integration into Andrean’s fast-paced volleyball environment has been seamless. She started playing volleyball at age 9, influenced by her cousins, Molly and Trevor Prisby, who have roots in Andrean volleyball. Trevor made a significant mark with the school’s first boys’ volleyball team, finishing his career with remarkable stats.
Bell believes Ehler has a promising future if she chooses to pursue collegiate volleyball. The next two years are crucial for her development. She needs to focus on enhancing her speed, strength, and jumping ability to reach the next level.
Not only is Ehler athletic, but she also has a keen volleyball IQ. Her teammate, Maya Mastalski, highlights her decision-making skills on the court, seeing Ehler as an intelligent player who adds value in critical game scenarios. To help Andrean compete against teams like Hanover Central and Illiana Christian, they need Ehler’s leadership and skill.
Looking ahead, Ehler is optimistic about her future in volleyball, whether it be in college or beyond. She aims to finish her high school career proud of her efforts and still passionate about the sport. ‘I want to finish on a good note,’ she said, emphasizing her commitment to the game.
