Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will face City Council member Nithya Raman in a runoff election for mayor this November. Both candidates emerged from a diverse primary field. The field even included Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star and registered Republican. His campaign criticized Bass for her response to last year’s Los Angeles wildfires.
No candidate secured more than 50% of the vote, forcing the top two finishers to a runoff. Although Pratt initially placed second, later vote counts showed Democratic-leaning results. This allowed Raman to surpass him, reflecting a statewide pattern in California primaries where later votes lean more Democratic.
Bass’ Background
Karen Bass, once a member of Congress, became mayor in 2022 after defeating Rick Caruso in a costly campaign. Her tenure witnessed a backlash, especially during the destructive wildfires. Over 16,000 structures burned while some hydrants ran dry, hampering firefighting efforts. A Los Angeles Times poll in March found 56% of respondents viewed Bass unfavorably.
Raman’s Campaign
Against this backdrop, Nithya Raman launched her campaign. Despite political ties with Bass, Raman believed urgent issues like housing and homelessness needed more action. Her campaign stressed the need for transformative policy changes in the city.
“My team and I have tried so hard to intervene aggressively on the most urgent issues that this city is facing,”Raman declared, highlighting challenges at City Hall.
Bass countered by pointing out Raman’s missed opportunities on the council. During a debate, Bass remarked,
“The problem is that for you to act like you’re brand new or you’ve been on the outside for the last almost six years is not accurate.”
Election Dynamics
Throughout her campaign, Bass acknowledged public frustrations over issues like wildfires and homelessness. She also highlighted her administration’s progress. On election night, she expressed confidence, thanking her supporters.
“I appreciate you for believing in me. I appreciate you for standing with me when others doubted me, because you know who I am,”Bass declared.
The race attracted attention from both sides of the political spectrum. Spencer Pratt’s campaign, though not successful, brought national attention. Pratt blamed Bass for the wildfire aftermath. While former President Donald Trump didn’t formally endorse Pratt, he showed interest in Pratt’s bid.
Runoff Election Outlook
The November runoff between Bass and Raman presents a unique match-up. Los Angeles Times polling before the primary showed both candidates had significant support against Pratt. However, the Bass vs. Raman scenario revealed a tighter race, with 40% of respondents unsure of their choice. This suggests a volatile campaign landscape ahead.
