A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, fatally shot a man who had injured him with a knife while resisting arrest. The incident, which occurred on a bustling city street, quickly led to protests as crowds gathered to demand accountability. Social media was flooded with cellphone video footage capturing the shooting, with three gunshots audible.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson held a news conference to address the situation. He emphasized the video provided only one view of the events. “I want to take a moment to honestly and sincerely offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss,” Patterson stated. The man, who was in his 30s, remains unnamed by the police.
The shooting took place in a popular neighborhood known for its restaurants, bars, shops, and homes, located less than two miles from the state Capitol. The scene saw numerous cars halted at the intersection, with bystanders observing the unfolding events. A similar incident occurred in 2015 on the same street when a white officer shot and killed Tony Robinson, a biracial man. That case concluded with no charges against the officer, who was deemed justified. The racial identities of the officer and the man involved in the recent shooting have not been disclosed.
Black advocacy groups, including Urban Triage, swiftly criticized the fatal encounter, suspecting the deceased was Black. “Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name,” declared Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage. In response, a crowd assembled at the site, chanting, “Arrest the cops!” They created a memorial with flowers and candles and held a vigil as the crowd swelled.
Protesters later marched to the Wisconsin State Capitol, disrupting a summer concert series to demand the officer’s name and accountability. Consequently, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra canceled the show.
The incident began with police responding to reports of someone trying to break into parked cars. The suspect fled on a bike through backyards before officers confronted him on the street. During the encounter, the man either fell or was taken off his bike and injured an officer with a knife. Officers attempted to use a taser, but it was ineffective. The injured officer fired his weapon, and the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting is a veteran, but no further details have been released. Another officer was injured, although the cause remains unclear, while the remaining two officers were unharmed.
The shooting is under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation, as it involves police officers. In accordance with department policy, the four responding officers are now on administrative leave.
