In Bangor, Maine, the Democratic Party has chosen Troy Jackson as their new Senate candidate. This decision follows Graham Platner’s withdrawal from the race, creating urgency for a replacement. The newly selected nominee, Troy Jackson, seeks to rally Platner’s former supporters in his challenge against Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Building Support Amid Past Conflicts
Jackson faced significant challenges due to controversies surrounding Platner. He withdrew his initial support of Platner after sexual assault allegations surfaced, impacting Platner’s campaign. Previously, both Jackson and Platner endorsed each other during their respective campaigns for governor and Senate. Jackson remained supportive despite multiple scandals involving Platner, until recent allegations ended Platner’s political pursuit.
Jackson now endeavors to sway Platner’s progressive voter base for a chance to defeat Collins. Over the weekend, he seemed to re-align closer to Platner’s platform, despite previous tensions.
Jackson’s Progressive Undertaking
Speaking during his nomination announcement in Bangor, Jackson explained his commitment to progressive politics. Although he initially did not aim to run for Senate, he felt compelled to continue promoting the agenda Platner had previously championed.
“I wish nothing would have happened with Graham,” Jackson expressed in Belfast, Maine. He acknowledged Platner’s strong local support, emphasizing his dedication to fighting for disillusioned voters seeking representation.
Republican Opposition and Criticism
National Republicans criticized Jackson for attempting to rally Platner’s supporters. Bernadette Breslin from the National Republican Senatorial Committee stated that Jackson was leveraging Platner’s controversial background to boost his own campaign.
Past Alliances and Current Controversies
Jackson and Platner previously collaborated as allies. Platner had endorsed Jackson, expressing alignment on labor issues and organized labor’s significance to American politics.
“Troy and I are entirely aligned on labor issues and organizing issues, and our policies align quite closely,” Platner stated, highlighting organized labor’s role in political futures.
When allegations against Platner intensified, Jackson, along with other Democrats, urged Platner to withdraw. Jackson stressed the importance of accountability and expressed concern for the working-class movement’s integrity in Maine.
Jackson’s Controversial Background
Jackson has faced scrutiny over allegations related to his temper, involving a water bottle-throwing incident in the Senate, and an old police record from 1988. The record implicated him in an alleged assault during a dispute.
Senator Collins refrained from commenting on this record but noted reports on Jackson’s temper.
Potential Write-In Campaign for Platner
Efforts surfaced to register Platner as a write-in candidate, although the deadline passed without his submission. A website promoting this initiative emerged, encouraging voters to challenge the Democratic establishment in Maine.
Niemi argued in the Bangor Daily News that writing in Platner would prove to establishment Democrats that they don’t get to ‘overrule the will of Maine voters.’
The proposal suggests ranking Jackson second due to Maine’s ranked-choice system to maintain competitiveness in the election.
