In the bustling Maine Senate race, Democrats have come together in support of former state Senate President Troy Jackson as the party’s nominating convention approaches this Saturday. Over the weekend, Maine counties conducted nomination meetings to select delegates. Following these meetings, several Democrats decided to withdraw from the race. This move followed significant victories for candidates on Jackson’s preferred slate.
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention Nirav Shah, Maine Beer Company co-founder Dan Kleban, and former Senate and House candidate Jordan Wood exited the race, encouraging Democrats to unite against GOP Sen. Susan Collins in the coming November elections. Bellows emphasized the need for Democrats to unite swiftly to achieve this shared goal.
Jackson’s path to the nomination became more clear after his endorsed candidates secured a majority of the 601 delegate slots. These delegates, though not legally obligated, are likely to support Jackson at the June 25 nominating convention. Expressing gratitude for the successful organizing efforts, Jackson praised supporters in a Facebook video, humorously downplaying his own involvement.
Jackson, 58, has been involved in Maine politics since 2002, first serving in the Maine House of Representatives before moving to the state Senate, where he held the presidency from 2018 to 2024. Before entering the Senate race, Jackson had aimed for the governor’s mansion, finishing third in the Democratic primary earlier this year. With strong ties to independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, whom he supported during the 2016 presidential campaign, Jackson aligns with progressive policies such as Medicare for All and taxing billionaires. He advocates for the abolition of ICE and criticizes U.S. support for Israel’s military, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
Following Jackson’s delegate successes, other candidates found little potential for advancing. Kleban acknowledged the lack of feasible pathways following the county nominating meetings.
The race to choose a Democratic nominee intensified following Graham Platner’s exit from the race amid sexual assault allegations, which he denies. Under Maine law, Democrats have until July 27 to select a new nominee, opting for a nominating convention to involve input from Maine residents. During his gubernatorial campaign, Jackson frequently joined Platner when influential figures like Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna visited.
Despite initially standing by Platner, Jackson later urged him to withdraw after the allegations surfaced, expressing disillusionment over Platner’s actions during an appearance on MSNOW.
The competition heats up as Democrats brace to challenge Collins within months. Collins, the sole Senate Republican seeking reelection in a state won by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, presents a significant opportunity for Democrats in November. However, Collins boasts a strong record of overcoming reelection challenges over nearly 30 years in the Senate. With 53 Republican senators, Democrats would need to flip four seats while defending others to regain control, with Maine playing a crucial role.
