Democrat Mary Peltola, who previously served as a congresswoman, is running against incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Peltola’s campaign centers on issues such as rising living costs, federal assistance, and the influence of former President Donald Trump.
In Bethel, a remote city in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, the cost of living is notably high. Residents pay nearly $7 for a pound of tomatoes. Milk, which is not always easy to find, costs over $13 per gallon. This forces nearly everyone in the area to hunt or fish for their food, as grocery prices are prohibitive.
Peltola criticizes Sullivan for his party’s policies, claiming they contribute to the financial strain constituents face. She aims to highlight these issues throughout the campaign as key points of her political agenda.
