Los Angeles health officials reported a measles case involving a traveler who arrived in the area, potentially exposing others at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and a nearby hotel. This took place after the traveler landed on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884 on June 11. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is actively investigating this incident.
This marks the sixth measles case reported in Los Angeles County this year. Officials emphasize that the risk of exposure may grow as more international guests arrive for the upcoming FIFA World Cup events in the region.
Exposure Details
Potential exposure occurred at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10 a.m. and noon on June 11. Another possible exposure site is the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel, specifically between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on the same day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently coordinating with local health departments to inform passengers who sat near the infected individual on the flight.
Anyone present at these locations during the specified times can develop symptoms between seven and 21 days post-exposure. Therefore, vigilance is recommended until July 2.
Health Advisory
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, with a rash beginning on the face and spreading elsewhere. Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, stressed the importance of being vaccinated: “The MMR vaccine is the safest and most reliable way to prevent measles and protect yourself, your family, and your community.”
Health officials encourage residents to confirm their vaccination status, particularly during the increased travel season.
