Scientists have reported significant shifts in the Mediterranean Sea driven largely by climate change. The warming of the sea, resulting from burning oil, coal, and gas, has led to increased temperatures, inviting numerous invasive fish species that harm native populations. The ensuing loss in biodiversity threatens the livelihood of coastal communities that rely on traditional fishing practices.
Impact of Climate Change on the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean is a designated climate change ‘hot spot.’ Scientists predict a temperature increase of 2 to 6 degrees Celsius by 2100. The sea’s enclosed nature prevents warmth from dissipating as easily as in larger oceans, leading to more frequent and severe heat waves. According to the Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change, these temperature rises are promoting the spread of invasive species.
Invasive Species Threaten Local Ecosystems
The spotted puffer fish and other invasive species are moving into regions like France and Spain, entering through the Suez Canal. UN reports highlight that invasive species like the lionfish and rabbitfish have been accelerating in spread since the rise in sea temperatures during the early 2000s. In Cyprus, these species have significantly disrupted local fish stocks, impacting fishers who rely on native species like the red mullet.
Efforts to Manage the Invasion
Piero Genovesi Papik from Italy’s Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research emphasizes the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel usage. Azzuro notes that about 1,000 invasive species have been identified in the Mediterranean, with 800 firmly established. In areas like the eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic coast, native mollusk populations have drastically declined.
Azzuro notes the stark changes in the ecosystems and highlights initiatives like the ‘Beware of those four’ campaign to educate about the risks, such as the toxicity of the puffer fish and the lionfish’s harmful spikes.
Strategies for Adaptation and Mitigation
Scientists propose ways for coastal communities to adapt, such as commercializing edible invasive species and financially compensating fishers to remove inedible ones like the puffer fish. Papik suggests preventing further migration via international treaties to treat ballast waters and applying special paint on ship hulls to prevent species latching on. Adjustments in fishing policies may also help native species regain numbers.
The focus for the future is on environmental restoration, finding new methods to recover biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea.
