Todd Blanche’s AG Vote in Doubt Amid IRS Deal Controversy

Postponed Vote on Todd Blanche as Attorney General

A critical Senate vote on Todd Blanche’s nomination as attorney general was postponed due to concerns from Republican senators over a deal involving former President Trump and the IRS. Two Republicans, John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, expressed significant reservations. They fear the deal, which Blanche negotiated, might still include favorable terms for Trump.

Blanche had agreed to eliminate a proposed $1.8 billion fund for victims of Justice Department actions during the Biden administration. However, he intended to retain a provision that would shield Trump and his family from future tax investigations. Cornyn and Tillis demand written assurance that this provision will not extend to future liabilities or others beyond Trump and his family.

“I’m not prepared to vote yes,” Senator Cornyn stated, emphasizing his need for concrete guarantees.

Negotiations continue as Charles E. Grassley, head of the Judiciary Committee, postponed the vote to build more support for Blanche’s nomination.

Political Tensions and Trump’s Influence

This situation highlights a recurring theme in Trump’s presidency: personal interests intersecting with public policy. Cornyn, who lost a primary to Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton, demands transparency and reassurances from Blanche regarding the IRS deal.

Trump attributed Cornyn’s resistance to politics, suggesting it was rooted in personal grievances, a notion Cornyn refuted. Blanche, who cannot lose a single Republican vote for a successful confirmation, finds himself short by two votes.

Tillis remains optimistic that resolving the dispute is only a matter of drafting the correct language for the deal, focusing on the tax audit provision’s clarity.

Confirmation Hearing Insights

During his confirmation hearing, Blanche faced bipartisan skepticism over his independence from the White House. Cornyn joined Democrats in questioning his ability to act impartially given his close ties to the Trump administration.

Justice Department officials have communicated with Cornyn’s office for a week, attempting to address his concerns about potential financial benefits for Trump from the IRS settlement.

Cornyn remains unsatisfied, demanding prompt action from the Justice Department. His reluctance reflects concerns over Blanche’s accountability and transparency in handling the matter.
