Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate from Colorado, recently encouraged more individuals with ties to the ‘global south’ to run for public office. By challenging the ‘exploitative and extractive’ nature of the United States, Kiros hopes to bring about change.
Speaking at the Wa’Ela Tigrai event in Denver, she discussed her congressional campaign, which gained momentum after she defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary.
Kiros drew inspiration from House ‘Squad’ members such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She highlighted the importance of assisting others in changing the global order. She emphasized that those who fundamentally grasp American exploitation should represent the nation.
During the event, she expressed the need for representation by individuals who understand America’s role in global exploitation. She argued for more immigrants and those with global south heritage in governmental roles, as they offer unique perspectives on decision-making.
Fox News Digital reached out to Kiros’ campaign for comment.
Kiros is one among several candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who successfully unseated an incumbent Democrat in the 2026 midterm primaries.
Her anti-capitalist stance stems from her experience as an attorney. She expressed feeling disheartened during law school upon realizing that the system functions as designed. Initially, she aimed to retire and care for her family, but later decided that fighting for community strength was essential.
She remarked, ‘Regardless of the outcome of my candidacy, my commitment is to fight for what I believe in instead of giving up.’
Previously, Kiros was dismissed from Sidley Austin law firm in 2023 after she openly criticized law firms for their actions against antisemitism on college campuses.
