Melinda French Gates plans to expand her philanthropic efforts aimed at enhancing women’s health globally. She is pledging an additional $215 million to support contraceptive access and maternal care. This initiative also aims to address the needs of middle-aged women, including a deeper look into menopause.

This new funding raises French Gates’ contributions to women’s health to more than $600 million over the past two years. She emphasized to The Associated Press that women’s health is central to her work through Pivotal, her group of philanthropic and investment organizations. According to her, prioritizing women’s health is crucial for their overall well-being.

Since 2024, after stepping away from The Gates Foundation, French Gates has refined her strategy to back women’s initiatives. Her recent funding reflects a targeted approach to areas lacking sufficient resources. This includes a $40 million donation to Co-Impact for integrating mental health support into maternal and primary care, especially across Africa. French Gates is also donating $10 million to the Menopause Society. This aims to advance menopause care in the U.S., focusing on educating healthcare practitioners and extending outreach in underserved areas.

The World Economic Forum notes that despite women comprising half the global population, health issues specific to them receive just 2% of private healthcare funding. This shortfall results in fewer products and services tailored to their needs. French Gates believes philanthropy should highlight ignored societal problems, drawing attention and funds toward solutions.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion from The Menopause Society emphasized the lack of menopause-competent practitioners in many U.S. counties. She said French Gates’ donation will help The Menopause Society distribute educational resources more broadly. Faubion noted that menopause remains one of the most neglected sectors in medicine.

Research funding for menopause was already insufficient before additional cuts during former President Donald Trump’s administration. Faubion expressed that philanthropy must now play a larger role due to reduced governmental support. While French Gates’ substantial donation is significant, the awareness it generates is also vital.

French Gates aims to make women’s health issues visible, ensuring women are not expected to endure pain without recognition. She hopes to address these issues so women can lead fulfilling lives.
