Essential Water Safety Tips for Families
Dr. Gauthama Soma, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, emphasizes the importance of water safety for families during Memorial Day weekend. As a mother of two, she advocates for ‘touch supervision’ for children near water. This method involves always keeping children within arm’s reach to prevent drowning, which is often silent. According to Dr. Soma, accidental deaths in young children due to drowning are preventable with proper precautions.
Dr. Soma advises that children should wear life vests approved by the Coast Guard. She also stresses the importance of parents learning CPR as a crucial skill to save lives.
Arizona Police Investigate Near-Drowning Incident
Earlier this year, Arizona police recommended felony child abuse charges against the parents of an 18-month-old boy who nearly drowned during a Super Bowl party. The incident drew attention when the child was mistakenly declared dead, only to be found alive hours later.
Vincent Fiordilino’s parents admitted to using marijuana and failing to supervise him properly at the party, leading to the incident where he was found floating face down in a pool.
Details of the Incident
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the Gilbert Police Department’s recommendation for charges against Vincent’s parents. According to investigators, Vincent disappeared from view during the gathering. His parents were impaired by marijuana, leading to the fall going unnoticed.
Police dismissed criminal charges against the physician who pronounced Vincent dead. Hospital staff detected signs of life, and the boy was found breathing.
The toddler was initially transported to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and declared dead. Hours later, medical personnel found him alive, leading to immediate airlifting to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Hospital Review and Family’s Ordeal
Mercy Gilbert Medical Center conducted a review following the incident. A spokesperson stated the hospital aimed to learn from the event and make improvements to ensure patient safety.
A GoFundMe campaign describes Vincent as a ‘miracle baby,’ detailing how he survived after being declared deceased. His recovery requires extensive therapy and medical monitoring.
