Trump Intervenes in Balogun’s World Cup Red Card Controversy

President Donald Trump stepped into Folarin Balogun’s red card controversy during the World Cup by reaching out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Trump made a request to review the decision from the Round of 32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as confirmed by a source to Fox News.

The specifics of Trump’s conversation with Infantino remain undisclosed; however, Trump has previously praised Infantino as a ‘great leader in sports’ and maintains a friendly relationship with him.

Balogun, a USMNT striker, was initially impacted by a red card. Despite scoring three goals in the World Cup, including prior to his red card in the Round of 32, he is now cleared to participate following recent developments.

The Athletic reported Balogun’s eligibility for play, citing FIFA’s disciplinary code. The code permits the judicial body to fully or partially suspend a disciplinary measure. Any similar future infringement during the probationary period would lead to the enforcement of the suspension without prejudice to additional sanctions.

FIFA confirmed Balogun’s suspension spans a one-year probationary period. U.S. Soccer expressed satisfaction over Balogun’s eligibility, focusing on the upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle.

Despite Belgium’s narrow win against Senegal, they voiced astonishment over FIFA’s decision. The Royal Belgian Football Association intends to investigate potential actions to overturn this decision.

Initially, USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino was contemplating lineup changes due to Balogun’s potential absence. However, Balogun’s availability allows for their regular starting lineup against Belgium.

If USMNT wins against Belgium, they’d achieve a historic milestone by reaching the quarterfinals, potentially facing Portugal or Spain next.

Trump and Infantino are expected to appear together at the World Cup Final in New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19. Trump will present the World Cup trophy on the field to the winning captain, as Infantino stated on ‘Fox & Friends.’

The USMNT’s potential victory adds historic weight, with hopes of surpassing previous achievements.
