Before the New York Giants faced the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, MetLife Stadium observed the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The pregame tribute honored victims and first responders.
Fans arriving at the stadium saw significant memorials. A ceremonial Ladder 343 truck, representing the FDNY, greeted attendees. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation displayed a steel beam from the World Trade Center outside the gates. Two columns of light echoed the Tribute in Light, illuminating the night above MetLife.
The NYPD and FDNY performed the national anthem. Players, coaches, and Giants season-ticket holders stretched a 100-yard wide American flag from end zone to end zone on the field.
During player introductions, New York City first responders formed a gauntlet for the Giants. Both teams wore commemorative NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD hats. Players and coaches sported “Never Forget” T-shirts during warm-ups.
The ceremony featured the Palumbo family as honorary captains for the coin toss, whose FDNY father perished on 9/11. A photo montage of lives lost played during a moment of silence. NYPD members led the Giants onto the field.
Giants legends joined first responders for the “Go Big Blue” chant before kickoff. New Giants coach John Harbaugh highlighted the tribute’s importance, emphasizing the heroes of that day. “It’s a story about heroes willing to run toward danger,” Harbaugh remarked. “To honor them means everything.”
Harbaugh, formerly of Baltimore, believes the Giants have brighter days ahead. He and the players stood solemnly during the national anthem, saluting the flag. The event was a powerful reminder of sacrifice and heroism.
