Baseball is often associated with tradition. When a player introduces something unconventional, it catches attention. Mets reliever Jefry Yan’s distinctive post-strikeout celebration is one such change. It’s drawn comparisons to a James Brown split, making waves among fans and players.
To gain insight into this unorthodox celebration, OutKick contacted former Major League pitcher Collin Balester for his perspective.
“I mean, there are players who sometimes add a small celebration here and there,” Balester remarked. He pointed out that large celebrations are customary in winter leagues in Mexico and Yan’s Dominican Republic. “But I’ve never seen someone leap ten feet in the air,” he added.
Balester, who has played for teams like the Nationals, Tigers, and Reds, expressed concern about the risks associated with Yan’s unique celebration. He noted potential injury risks, saying, “If I were the team, I’d be anxious about him injuring his knee with such jumps.” He also mentioned the risk of injury from Yan’s moves, advising the Mets to potentially put a stop to it.
Despite Balester’s concerns, Yan continues to showcase this celebration in the Major Leagues, a move that surprises Balester. He said, “I didn’t think he’d carry it to the big leagues, but he has, to his credit.” However, he predicted that hitters might not appreciate the showmanship if they’re struck out and faced with such a display.
Balester, reflecting on changes in the game since his career from 2008 to 2015, said, “The game is different now; players are noticeably exhibiting flair when hitting home runs.” But with Yan’s celebration, Balester sees a potential advantage. “People will likely try too hard to counteract him, and that might backfire,” he commented.
While some criticize Yan’s approach as enticing retaliation, Balester believes it might have unforeseen benefits for the pitcher. “It is risky, inviting response, but also advantageous in the long game,” he concluded.
