The Mexican government is auctioning a piece of land within a country club where Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” died in February during a confrontation with the army. While officials have not identified the previous owner of the land, nor explicitly linked it to El Mencho, it is situated in the same area where the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed.
The auction starts at around $750,000 and includes 211 properties set to be sold this Thursday. This follows the government’s earlier auctions of homes linked to drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently incarcerated in the United States.
The operation leading to El Mencho’s death involved Mexican special forces and utilized U.S. intelligence. After being tracked to his hideout in Jalisco, he was found “hidden in the undergrowth.” Religious items, including a crucifix and a handwritten psalm, were discovered in his home.
Following his death, CJNG responded by setting up roadblocks and torching vehicles across a significant portion of Mexico. This violent response resulted in the deaths of dozens, including 25 Mexican National Guard members. The Trump administration had previously designated CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2025.
In March, El Mencho was buried in a golden casket in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, with a large military presence marking the occasion. The cartel faced another setback recently when top leader Audias Flores Silva, also known as “El Jardinero,” was captured hiding in a roadside ditch. The U.S. had offered a $5 million reward for his arrest.
A U.S. federal grand jury has since added charges against Silva for methamphetamine trafficking and money laundering conspiracy.
