Microplastics Linked to Increased Heart Attack Risk

Recent research reveals that patients with severe heart attacks may have higher levels of micro- and nanoplastics in their blood compared to those with stable heart conditions. Italian researchers conducted an analysis on coronary artery blood samples from 61 patients undergoing angiograms, assessing blood vessels for irregularities.

The study showed that 84% of patients suffering from severe heart attacks had detectable micro- and nanoplastics in their blood. This contrasts with 40% of patients with chronic heart disease and 32% of individuals with normal coronary arteries.

Conducted by Dr. Raffaele Marfella and colleagues at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples, the study was published in the European Heart Journal. Polyethylene, commonly found in plastic bags and bottles, was detected in 97% of patients who tested positive for plastics.

According to Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian, these findings contribute to the growing research on microplastics’ potential role in heart disease. Though notable, Routhenstein cautioned that the findings should be viewed within a broader environmental health context.

“These findings highlight the importance of considering environmental factors contributing to inflammation and blood vessel injury,” she stated, noting that the study does not prove plastics cause heart attacks.

A history of smoking was identified as the strongest predictor of plastic particles in the blood. The study, being observational, can only suggest an association between microplastics and heart disease.

Other factors, such as smoking and air pollution, are also linked to higher cardiovascular disease risk, complicating the data analysis. Heating food in glass or ceramic, instead of plastic, can reduce microplastic exposure.

Routhenstein recommends reviewing daily sources of microplastics and swapping them for safer alternatives. For example, replace plastic food storage containers with glass ones to minimize exposure.

When preparing meals, use glass or ceramic containers instead of plastic. Limit the use of plastic water bottles, especially when exposed to heat.

Reducing plastic exposure should be part of an overall heart-healthy lifestyle strategy.
