Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth has secured the Republican nomination for governor, positioning herself to face the Democratic candidate in November. This follows her victory in the Republican primary, where she overcame former President Donald Trump’s endorsed contender, Mike Lindell, the MyPillow founder.
Demuth remained in the race after missing the Republican Party’s endorsement to Kendall Qualls at the state convention. Despite Qualls securing the endorsement after ten ballots, Demuth emphasized her legislative experience and leadership among House Republicans, describing these as her key strengths for the November election.
Republicans in Minnesota face a challenging landscape. The party has not won a statewide election since Governor Tim Pawlenty’s narrow reelection victory in 2006. Since then, they have faced 28 unsuccessful statewide contests, marking an 18-year dry spell, the longest for a major party in the state’s history.

This race underwent a significant change when the incumbent, Governor Tim Walz, withdrew from his reelection bid in January. Walz cited an intention to focus on curtailing fraud within state programs in his last year rather than defending his political career. His decision followed intense scrutiny over allegations of fraud in government-funded initiatives.
Earlier, Walz had pursued a third term; however, pressures mounted due to criticism over fraud allegations, which reportedly involved over $9 billion. This scrutiny became a critical vulnerability for his administration, primarily targeted by Republican rivals.
Governor Walz’s tenure included signing into law a set of Democratic initiatives, such as expanded abortion access, free school meals, legalized recreational marijuana, and family and medical leave. Despite this, his administration faced continuous backlash regarding alleged fraudulent activities in state programs.
The governor’s unexpected withdrawal redirected focus toward Amy Klobuchar. Her entry reshaped the election into a contest against an experienced Democratic politician with statewide recognition. The race, initially seen as a referendum on Walz’s administration, shifted dynamics with her participation.
