The Minnesota Vikings have named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, choosing him over J.J. McCarthy. This decision was disclosed by a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously on Tuesday, as the team had not officially announced the decision. Head coach Kevin O’Connell had promised a fair competition between Murray, the new arrival, and McCarthy, the current player.
While Murray received most of the first-team reps, McCarthy had significant practice time in sessions open to the public. With Murray adjusting to a new system and staff after moving from the Arizona Cardinals, making an early decision on the starter helps him better utilize the training camp period to learn the offense.
J.J. McCarthy, a top draft pick in 2024 from Nazareth and Michigan, faced difficulties in his first year, limited to 10 starts due to various injuries. For additional veteran experience, the team has also re-signed Carson Wentz.
