Babe Ruth is recognized as a baseball legend, yet the passage of time has made one of today’s MLB stars question his existence. Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs expressed a controversial opinion, suggesting that Ruth might be more mythical than legendary.
This theory, introduced by Crow-Armstrong on Kristin Cavallari’s podcast “Let’s Be Honest,” is indeed unconventional. Alongside fellow Cub Carson Kelly, when asked for an unpopular opinion, Crow-Armstrong replied, “‘Babe Ruth never existed’ is one that I like.” He further explained, referencing a conversation by Seattle Mariners pitcher Tayler Saucedo, who speculated about Ruth’s existence due to the limited video footage of the legendary player in action.
Addressing these thoughts further, Crow-Armstrong elaborated by drawing parallels with the evolution of baseball over the years. “We always talk about how the game is evolving,” he remarked. Crow-Armstrong, emphasizing the radical change in play styles, jokingly said, “People might as well have been underhanding the ball to that guy, and he’s regarded as one of the best players ever.”
The reaction from Kelly to Crow-Armstrong’s opinion was humor and disbelief, with Kelly plainly stating, “that’s crazy.” Comparisons were made to conspiracy theories like the moon landing, prompting a shift in conversation.
Crow-Armstrong has been in the spotlight before, particularly following comments about Dodgers fans, whom he criticized despite being a native of Los Angeles. When playing in LA earlier this year, fans mocked him for his remarks. Speaking with Maddie Lee from the Los Angeles Times, Crow-Armstrong reacted, “‘If we’re going to be immature and childish about it,’ he said, ‘I’d say they started it, they just gave me an opportunity to kind of run with it.’”
