Earlier, Shabtai had requested nearby children to stop using fireworks near her home on July 4. Later, she awoke to the sound of frantic door pounding and her dog barking.
My dog started barking, so I woke up and I stumbled to the door. I opened the door and the gentleman was yelling, ‘Fire! Fire!’
Mrs. Shabtai recounted her shock upon seeing the flames through her backyard’s French doors, describing it as a “wall of orange.” Her sister responded swiftly, grabbing a garden hose to fight the fire. Meanwhile, Shabtai evacuated her 14-month-old son and alerted her neighbors.
