WNBA Faces Scrutiny Over Deleted Betting Video with Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers

WNBA star Angel Reese from the Atlanta Dream remains unfazed by the recent public relations issues faced by the league. The controversy arose after the WNBA shared, then deleted, a video featuring Reese and Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings. This video inadvertently touched upon a sensitive topic in professional sports: gambling.

Controversial Situation

The WNBA admitted the video ‘missed the mark’ after critics highlighted the issue. Reese and Bueckers had agreed to a $400 bet before their matchup in Arlington. The Atlanta Dream narrowly won 82-81, and Reese nonchalantly addressed the bet, saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this.’

Observers questioned whether such banter would be acceptable in other leagues, such as the NBA. Comparative treatment of different players in similar situations also sparked debate among critics.

A critic wrote, ‘[Reese] only admitted it because it was filmed, who knows what other games she bet on?’

Questions arose about how the league would react if players like Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham engaged in a similar wager.

League Policies and Response

The WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement specifically prohibits players from placing bets on any league game. Violations of this policy allow the commissioner to impose penalties, with options ranging from fines and suspensions to lifelong bans. These measures aim to maintain the league’s integrity.

The incident led to immediate concerns over potential breaches of the league’s anti-gambling policy. The WNBA addressed the situation in a statement, describing the interaction as ‘lighthearted’ and announcing that no disciplinary action would be taken.

While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league’s policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies.

Despite the deletion of the video solving a temporary PR issue, it brought attention to how the league manages its standards. The WNBA assured that it would use the scenario as an opportunity to reinforce its policies with the players involved.
